SHOWING FAITH IN MONEY ISSUES

From Fear to Faith by Howard Lyon

I just listened to the following talk by Elder Nelson. What is the status of my faith? What am I doing to increase my faith? How do I go from fear to showing my faith in my daily life.

Some things Elder Nelson said that stood out to me:

God declared in the first of His Ten Commandments, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”2‍ He also said, “Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not.”3‍ Yet so many people look only to their bank balance for peace or to fellow human beings for models to follow...Problems abound in this world because it is populated by imperfect people. Their objectives and desires are heavily influenced by their faith or lack of it. Many put other priorities ahead of God. Some challenge the relevance of religion in modern life...We can gain great knowledge from the scriptures and obtain inspiration through prayers of faith.Doing so will help us as we make daily decisions...In 1986, President Thomas S. Monson said: “Of course we will face fear, experience ridicule, and meet opposition. Let us have the courage to defy the consensus, the courage to stand for principle. Courage, not compromise, brings the smile of God’s approval. … Remember that all men have their fears, but those who face their fears with [faith] have courage as well.”12 ... Day after day, on your path toward your eternal destiny, increase your faith. Proclaim your faith! Let your faith show!13

I was thinking about recently how we had lots of car expenses. l mentioned in a previous post about how my husband resented me because I was the one that purchased the "kid car" but I did communicate with him about it and did not purchase it without our agreeing. I prayed "If it is not thy will we purchase these vehicles please close up the way". So the trials came. We made more decisions which led to even more expenses but I felt peace. I really had faith that God was in our life. He is leading us. My faith in not in my bank balance for peace. For the first time.

I remember when we had so many financial trials and my thoughts became, "If only I had money then I will be happy". "If only my husband stops looking at pornography....then; If only I lose weight; if only my husband loses weight; if only i pray, read scriptures, better wife, mother, and on and on....."

A miracle occurred when I turned my financial life to God and surrendered the fear, the resentment toward my husband and his 20,000 dollars he spent and I payed off through working, the pain in my heart regarding money, the control it had on every part of my life....and then what could I do....trust that God knows me and is in the details of my life.

It was a slow process but when these car expenses came (how was I to know the timing belt would break a few weeks after purchasing it and the valve would be bent?) and the peace was still there. I knew my heart had been changed (not that I am not susceptible to becoming a victim again  of money if I cling back to my own strength). So a few nights ago hubby was finishing up the taxes and he said....we are getting $2,000 back. Well that covers our negative that we had on the engine expenses. See hubby we are being blessed. He had done the taxes previously and the file was destroyed. He had to start all over and because of that he looked into our medical expenses more extensively last year which lead to a lot more than previously thought. See the corrupt file turned out to be good, the engine is paid for, and all we have to do is trust in God. Let our faith SHOW!

This is easier said than done. It is almost impossible to see fear and overcome it in a faith way. It is hard to do alone. To have a bishop and therapist say you have major issues regarding money. To have them say, "it is just paper. God can give you a money tree if he wanted to. You have serious issues regarding money. It is a faith issue. I want money to be about unity. It must balance and you need to agree. Let money be an area of unity." but...but...but you don't understand. Look what he has done for 20 years. "Yes it is understandable why you feel the way you do. You have become a victim". So long story short. If i sacrificed enough money then I would have enough. If I didn't buy clothes for me my husband would see my sacrifice for our family and want to sacrifice. If I didn't spend, go to the store, lived on less, grow a garden to save money (OK I think they cost lots, take lots of time and don't save you that much. A story for another place), cook more, then I will be financially OK. I was a victim to money and my husbands spending.

Now we sit down each Sunday and try to use money to build unity. It is not perfect but improving. I have money to spend on me. I actually have to let it build for while till I decide what I want to spend it on. I buy more clothes for me. I get my hair done more frequently. I have a faith in my God that in greater than my bank account. Greater than my engines that get ruined, Cars that get in accidents, 2 ER trips in one month, and the list can go on.

So my next issue I feel very strongly about but don't know exactly how to pursue but in faith is regarding working Saturdays. I work Saturdays and I find that may of the Saturdays I don't work that due to life we have not had much "connection time" together for the previous month. It becomes a famine in our marriage. I feel strongly that I need every weekend off to grow and nourish our marriage. After 20 years, it is time to fall in love. Time to heal deep wounds. Time to learn to talk, laugh, feel, and love. Time to weed our marriage garden. Time to plant flowers, nourish those plants, and keep weeds that sprout pulled. This takes TIME!!!

So what path do I pursue? I have many things that are crossing my mind. I was at work for a meeting and a position is going to come available for 10-6 during the week. I could work one day during the week and have weekends off. I just need to have faith a way will open up for me to get the position if it is His will. Another option, is to work on a Yoga business. I teach for free right now but I could abandon my missionary goals regarding my class and try to grow a business instead. I could try to do both. Keep free classes and charge for others. I could do all the above. Do my class at the church, work my one day, and grow a paid clientele for my Yoga. My husband could get a raise (obviously something that I have no ability to pursue) and I could quit my job and just teach my free yoga class and just nourish our family relationships. I really would be happy with any of these. I just need to proceed in faith because what I do know is that I need every Saturday with my family. I think my next step I will do is talk to my boss about working during the week as a task nurse. This is what I feel would be the logical next step. Please pray that if it the right thing a way will open up. Just writing this down has help me formulate my thoughts in a coherent way that feels good.

So today is Saturday. I am grateful to be home today. Feel a humility from my husband that I love and not the stressed out man I have had all week who was short, worked lots and home little. I said after writing this. want to go out tonight? Yes, he says. That would be nice. Yes it would...

Let Your Faith Show

Dear brothers and sisters, we express our deepest feelings of love and gratitude‍ for you. We are grateful for our assignments among you.
On a recent flight, our pilot announced that we would encounter turbulence during our descent and that all passengers must fasten their seat belts securely. Sure enough, turbulence came. It was really rough. Across the aisle and a couple of rows behind me, a terrified woman panicked. With each frightening drop and jarring bump, she screamed loudly. Her husband tried to comfort her but to no avail. Her hysterical shouts persisted until we passed through that zone of turbulence to a safe landing. During her period of anxiety, I felt sorry for her. Because faith is the antidote for fear, I silently wished that I could have strengthened her faith.
Later, as passengers were leaving the aircraft, this woman’s husband spoke to me. He said, “I’m sorry my wife was so terrified. The only way I could comfort her was to tell her that ‘Elder Nelson is on this flight, so you don’t need to worry.’”
I’m not sure that my presence on that flight should have given her any comfort, but I will say that one of the realities of mortal life is that our faith will be tested and challenged. Sometimes those tests come as we face what appear to be life-and-death encounters. For this frightened woman, a violently rocking plane presented one of those moments when we come face-to-face with the strength of our faith.
When we speak of faith—the faith that can move mountains—we are not speaking of faith in general but of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ can be bolstered as we learn about Him and live our religion. The doctrine of Jesus Christ was designed by the Lord to help us increase our faith. In today’s vernacular, however, the word religion‍ can mean different things to different people.
The word religion‍ literally means “to ligate again” or “to tie back” to God.1‍ The question we might ask ourselves is, are we securely tied to God so that our faith shows, or are we actually tied to something else? For example, I have overheard conversations on Monday mornings about professional athletic games that took place on the preceding Sunday. For some of these avid fans, I have wondered if their “religion” would “tie them back” only to some kind of a bouncing ball.
We might each ask ourselves, where is our faith? Is it in a team? Is it in a brand? Is it in a celebrity? Even the best teams can fail. Celebrities can fade. There is only One in whom your faith is always safe, and that is in the Lord Jesus Christ. And you need to let your faith show!
God declared in the first of His Ten Commandments, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”2‍ He also said, “Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not.”3‍ Yet so many people look only to their bank balance for peace or to fellow human beings for models to follow.
Clinicians, academicians, and politicians are often put to a test of faith. In pursuit of their goals, will their religion show or will it be hidden? Are they tied back to God or to man?
I had such a test decades ago when one of my medical faculty colleagues chastised me for failing to separate my professional knowledge from my religious convictions. He demanded that I not combine the two. How could I do that? Truth is truth! It is not divisible, and any part of it cannot be set aside.
Whether truth emerges from a scientific laboratory or through revelation, all truth emanates from God. All truth is part of the gospel of Jesus Christ.4‍ Yet I was being asked to hide my faith. I did not comply with my colleague’s request. I let my faith show!
In all professional endeavors, rigorous standards of accuracy are required. Scholars cherish their freedom of expression. But full freedom cannot be experienced if part of one’s knowledge is ruled “out-of-bounds” by edicts of men.
Spiritual truth cannot be ignored—especially divine commandments. Keeping divine commandments brings blessings, every time! Breaking divine commandments brings a loss of blessings, every time!5
Problems abound in this world because it is populated by imperfect people. Their objectives and desires are heavily influenced by their faith or lack of it. Many put other priorities ahead of God. Some challenge the relevance of religion in modern life. As in every age, so today there are those who mock or decry the free exercise of religion. Some even blame religion for any number of the world’s ills. Admittedly, there have been times when atrocities have been committed in the name of religion. But living the Lord’s pure religion, which means striving to become a true disciple of Jesus Christ, is a way of life and a daily commitment that will provide divine guidance. As you practice your religion, you are exercising your faith. You are letting your faith show.
The Lord knew that His children would need to learn how to find Him. “For strait is the gate,” He said, “and narrow the way that leadeth unto … exaltation … , and few there be that find it.”6
The scriptures provide one of the best ways to find our course and stay on it. Scriptural knowledge also provides precious protection. For example, throughout history, infections like “childbirth fever” claimed the lives of many innocent mothers and babies. Yet the Old Testament had the correct principles for the handling of infected patients, written more than 3,000 years ago!7‍ Many people perished because man’s quest for knowledge had failed to heed the word of the Lord!
My dear brothers and sisters, what are we missing in our lives if we are “ever learning, [but] never able to come to the knowledge of the truth”?8‍ We can gain great knowledge from the scriptures and obtain inspiration through prayers of faith.
Doing so will help us as we make daily decisions. Especially when the laws of man are created and enforced, God’s laws must ever be our standard. In dealing with controversial issues, we should first search for God’s guidance.
We should “liken all scriptures unto us … for our profit and learning.”9‍ Danger lurks when we try to divide ourselves with expressions such as “my private life” or even “my best behavior.” If one tries to segment his or her life into such separate compartments, one will never rise to the full stature of one’s personal integrity—never to become all that his or her true self could be.
The temptation to be popular may prioritize public opinion above the word of God. Political campaigns and marketing strategies widely employ public opinion polls to shape their plans. Results of those polls are informative. But‍ they could hardly be used as grounds to justify disobedience to God’s commandments! Even if “everyone is doing it,” wrong is never right. Evil, error, and darkness will never be truth, even if popular. A scriptural warning so declares: “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness.”10
After World War I, a rather risqué song became popular. In promoting immorality, it vowed that 50 million people cannot be wrong. But in fact, 50 million people can‍ be wrong—totally wrong. Immorality is still immorality in the eyes of God, who one day will judge all of our deeds and desires.11
Contrast the fear and faithlessness so prevalent in the world today with the faith and courage of my dearly beloved daughter Emily, who now lives on the other side of the veil. As mortal life was leaving her cancer-ridden body, she could barely speak. But with a smile on her face, she said to me, “Daddy, don’t worry about me. I know I will be all right!” Emily’s faith was showing—showing brightly—in that tender moment, right when we needed it most.
This beautiful young mother of five had full faith in her Heavenly Father, in His plan, and in the eternal welfare of her family. She was securely tied back to God. She was totally faithful to covenants made with the Lord and with her husband. She loved her children but was at peace, despite her impending separation from them. She had faith in her future, and theirs too, because she had faith in our Heavenly Father and His Son.
In 1986, President Thomas S. Monson said: “Of course we will face fear, experience ridicule, and meet opposition. Let us have the courage to defy the consensus, the courage to stand for principle. Courage, not compromise, brings the smile of God’s approval. … Remember that all men have their fears, but those who face their fears with [faith] have courage as well.”12
President Monson’s counsel is timeless! So I plead with you, my dear brothers and sisters: Day after day, on your path toward your eternal destiny, increase your faith. Proclaim your faith! Let your faith show!13

I pray that you will be securely tied back to God, that His eternal truths will be etched on your heart forever. And I pray that, throughout your life, you will let your faith show! In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

FAITH and Trust in the PATH!!!

I have been getting up at 4 am to do yoga. I never in my craziest dreams thought I would WANT to get up at 4 am to have 2 hours to myself to center my day. I do take a 20-30 min nap most afternoons but it is a rejuvenating nap. I never thought I would do a "home practice" until after I took my teacher training. Now I see, for me, it is essential to start my day having focused my day. My mind feels clear and my heart open. It may close as the day progresses but it starts open and the hope is each day my heart will stay open longer.

Why is my heart so closed. HISTORY! It is how we all become closed. A little child can get a closed heart to cope with their surroundings. I felt my heart open all my childhood. In adolescence, I started coping with food. I think it is in my genetics to have a tendency (kind of like alcoholism) toward food addiction. I see it in many of my siblings and most of us are always battling. Our contentious home in my teen years didn't help our ability to cope. After 20 years of gaining and losing 20 pounds, exercising out of fear or needing to lose the last binge weight, and pain associated with feeling out of control. It seemed no amount prayer or scripture study helped, but I kept a pleading of help and faith in my heart. I gained my first taste of sobriety when I attended OA (over-eaters Anonymous) and i loved their approach. It talked about surrendering your food but also eliminating foods that you can't control. This put me on a path of eliminating, eliminating more, and more. No white flour, no sugar unless he 5th ingredient, no cakes, cookies, candy.....and so forth.

This went on for a year. I felt crazy still. My marriage was crazy....my husband was acting out regularly in his addiction, I was bingeing on broccoli, carrots, and nuts....I found that I wanted to numb myself and would go to any lengths I could because I was feeling so crazy (now I see so many tools that I needed but was scared to use- trust counseling (no way can trust others), use medicine (bad says media).

This led me to a year later laying in the back yard on the trampoline looking up at the sky. It was a beautiful day. I said God, HELP! I poured out my soul to Him. I just sat there looking at the sky and focusing on feeling peace in my heart (now I know this is meditation). I felt a peace come into my heart and I just felt a warmth come over me and a feeling that said "surrender". I have God. "No, you haven't. Food is not bad or good. It is to feed our bodies. It can give us pleasure if kept within the bounds I have set. It can give us pain if we control it."

So I let go and Let God, with a timing that is not my timing. I continued to study the 12 steps but stopped "eliminating" everything I labeled as "BAD".

So for the Last 10 years I have struggled with what to do. I always went back to surrender each time I would go into control mode. I tried Adkins....not good. I tried Paleo...restrict. I tried Vegan...felt weak. I surrendered and went back to reading about nutrition. Learning about my body. Finding healthy recipes that our family liked that included lots of fruits and vegetables, lean meats, beans, and I started to change inside. I started to fall in love with good food (my husband says I am a food snob). I started to try new vegetables and new fruits. The ones I like, I saved.

I have no restrictions on my food. It is about changing from the inside out. I needed to get my brain chemistry right. I started on medication for depression which helped my binge episodes. Huge help (this after finding the right one). Then I started therapy and he has help me see my "thinking" in affecting my brain. I started on Inattentive ADD medication after realizing I had suffered with that for years after studying some things I was seeing in my daughter. I realized I was suffering with the same thing and I was diagnosed (no hyperactivity) as well.

When I did my yoga training, he had us take a ring and put it on a piece of thread. We lay down and held the string still so the ring didn't move. Then we were to just "think" right left but we were to hold the ring still. So in our minds we said the mantra "right-left, right-left, right-left" and I was shocked. The ring started moving right-left no matter how hard I tried to hold it still. Then I thought the mantra "front and back, front and back" and it went front and back. The last one was "circle to the left" and it circled to the left. I thought wow this is very mystical...nope. It was just the power of a thought on the physical body. Our thinking affect our physical body. If we have lots of negative thinking, victims, persecutors, or rescuers, we change our brains physical chemistry.

Yesterday I read this article called "Believing is Seeing" by Lynne Forrest. She said

As the ancient philosopher, Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe wrote, “… the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. A whole stream of events issue from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforseen incidents andmeetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would have come his way.”...
I know of no scientific explanation, except it is what is. Healing is self-initiated, but miraculously affected. I believe the healing process to be one ofthe myriad ways we experience God...
One of the more beneficial ways to collaborate with the healing process is through the power of envisioning...
The creative imagination is the first step in concrete realization. We have to dream it first. Positive things in life do not come through someone else “doing it for you”. Nor do they come as a result of how worthy you are. Witness the many “deserving” people you know who are living in scarcity and struggle. Nor is it through some happenstance or “good” luck We “invoke” what we have into our lives, whether it be positive or negative. Our circumstances are determined by what we believe. And belief comes from our ability to see it, or not! Notice the word “see” in that sentence. What does it mean? It means that whatever we visualize for ourselves is what will be. How we see ourselves is determined by what we are “I am-ing “, or proclaiming as reality. For “I am” is the universal mantra of manifestation. If I announce from belief that I am worthy, it means I envision myself as a worthwhile person. And I will act and others will respond accordingly. I believe it because that’s how I see myself and by announcing it, it is reality...Conscious invocation is a type of prayer. A style of supplication which includes visualization, gratitude and acceptance. We achieve our hearts desire first by allowing our inner longing to motivate us to visualize it as possible and real. We have to see it first on the inner plains before we can execute it externally. Second, we allow ourselves to feel gratitude for our visualized longing, as if it has already come to pass. As if it is present tense. Right now! This concretizes our image, and opens the door for manifestation. Further, practicing gratitude moves us into a state of expansion. Only from such an expanded stance can abundance come. When we become constricted due to an attitude of scarcity, limited vision or fear, we close the door on the realm of possibilities. And third, after we give thanks, we simply surrender it. What more is there to do? We’ve already visualized and embraced it with gratitude. Attempts to control, manipulate, or worry and fret merely moves us back into a contracted state of being. The door then closes. Universal flow is thwarted. Acceptance of what I am invoking as being in the natural order of things is what is most needed now. It then becomes my task to assist, not control, the process of manifesting desire into reality. When I speak of surrender or acceptance, I’m not implying that we are supposed to sit passively by, twittling our proverbial thumbs in wait for that which has been invoked. What I mean is that belief results from visualizing our goal, which then leads us to expect it to come about. What do you do when you are expecting someonefor a visit, for instance? You prepare for their coming, of course! It’s the same sort of thing . We set about the work of preparation. From an expectant state of readiness, we watch for “windows of opportunity”. And we “act as if”.

Reading this was powerful to me. It is is a good summary of a few truths that are found in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I see Truth in so many places. I love seeing it.

So I see Faith as another name for "believing is seeing"

For “I am” is the universal mantra of manifestation.  Christ was know by these words "I AM". It is another name for the power that God has in our lives.

The creative imagination is the first step in concrete realization. This was a wow factor. So we are divine beings. We can each create spiritually what we want physically.

LATER:

I love counseling sessions. I had read about deescalation and I didn't even see how I could put it into practice when I had a recent conflict with my husband. I felt justified and knew he was absolutely in the wrong. The things is I could have completely turned the situation around. I had power to not be a victim in the situation.

Two weekends ago, we had the most amazing 2 days. It was really nice. So I ask the counselor how to not go into the victim role? I told him how my last week had gone but I just didn't know what to do. I felt trapped and I would contradict my self-talk but it was alot of work. So first we backtracked.

What thoughts and behaviors did you have that good weekend? The goal is to see what worked and reproduce it. Even if he is not. Yes that is the part that makes it challenging. So first the good weekend:

  • Accepted dinner invite from hubby
  • I wanted to try again (after botched valentines date). Forgiveness/Repentance
  • Communication- Active Listening
  • Interested in what he had to say
  • non-controlling
  • non-judgmental
  • shared emotions
  • happy
  • asked questions
  • supportive and encouraging
The we analyze the bad communication event (went bad in less than 10 minutes)
  • I was stressed
  • losing control due to stress felt from dealing with emotional daughter
  • not listening
  • passive listening- passive personality is when don't edit or changed based upon what comes from environment. I AM what my environment says. I let peoples crap pass through me with no filter.
  • not interested in what he was saying
  • critical
  • struggled to have positive feelings
  • defensive
So the kicker:
1. Get out of angry/defensive posture
I have no ability to think clearly, apply skills, or have filters when in this kind of posture
The Savior after 40 days of fasting is confronted by Lucifer. The Pharisees mocked and criticized. Not in any situation did he lose control. I said...well he was not exactly human. He said he was but he had the ability to do call down an army of angels if he wanted. He always kept who he is....in-spite of what was going on around him.
Joseph Smith faced similar situations and he learned to face situations. (side note: He learned and we judge his history heavily on his humanness.)

If as a husband and wife we each keep out of this angry defensive posture then we will have more good times than bad. BUT even if my husband does NOT keep out of this, I don't have to go there.

THE EXPERIMENT:
He wants me to try something. He said he is more concerned about what I AM doing. He wants me to own up to me and not even to worry about how I feel about what he does.

He wants me to apply the golden rule. Treat him as I would want to be treated. Be positive, active listening, I statements, praise, and all the other good communication techniques (another time to post these).

He said if divert from this just keep coming back. (sound like yoga talk)

Do not correct or steer him. No bossing. Nagging. etc

Positive Self-talk. Meditation.

Put together a tool box: music, movies, books, letters, photos, article, etc that will motivate  or encourage me to stay out of this defensive posture.

THE HARD PART:
When someone speaks hard things towards you. When someone speaks critical of you, mocks you, belittles you, and does not listen to you.
FIRST STEP: Pause...Don't get defensive!!!
SECOND STEP: Use good communication techniques

"You are a child abuser!!!", hubby says.  So you feel like I am a child abuser? How do you feel about the situation? So you feel.....? That must be hard. I love you. You are...praise.

Deescalation!!!!

Next time I would apply the things I learned. My greatest thing I am going to try to do as I am around my husband, kids, and friends is to LISTEN!!!  UNDERSTAND their point of view, even when it is HARD!!!
I suffered for days how I handled it because I lost my inner self. I became a victim. Is it understandable  to react (and even justified at times in our heads) and difficult to not react....YES!!!

This is what really happened....
My journal entry Entry of the Situation:
So yesterday my kids pushed me to my limits. Hubby was gone for a doctor appt. My daughter was an emotional roller coaster. Blow up after Blow up. I tried to be patient. Earlier in day hubby sent me an email apologizing for how he treated me yesterday because he felt me distance myself. I was so pleased that I never got defensive. He could not blame me because I used my skills to keep out of a defensive posture and so he had to take ownership of his attitude. He wote:

I am sorry about this morning and the last several days. Friday night we had some short words I don't remember what about, and then Saturday night when I was talking to you about my felling from the day, I felt distance from you. I felt us slipping back into old patterns of inpatients and pore communication. Sunday I felt distance and the walls around your hart back up. This morning you brought up some things that (son) said to you that are inappropriate in both attitude and substance. I want to be clear, he can not talk to you that way, and I am going to have a nice visit with him tonight and straighten that out. I have some feelings about the subject that are a little tender and raw, and I let those run away with me this morning, and for that I am sorry. I don't want (son) to know anything about those concerns and they are none of his business. The boys have observed some of the same things I have. (refering to my inability to keep a house of order as it fluctuates with my ups and downs) I have counseled them to treat you with love and respect and a spirit of service though your struggles as I have tried to do. They are at an age where Mom and Dad don't seem to know much and kids at that age have some contempt for there parents who in there estimation "just don't get it". When we were there age we saw our parents that way, remember. Not that it is OK but we can have some empathy. The bottom line is that I love you and I am grateful for all that you do every day to serve our family and I want to encourage you. I want us to get back to the communication and level of peace and understanding that we enjoyed last week. I will come home today with a attitude of hope and peace and I hope that you will join me in an effort to make our home a place of peace and love that is safe for all to enjoy..

When he called during the day, he brought up genuinely wondering why our son said those things???  I was hesitant but he asked and I felt he was soft and would hear me (maybe). I told him not to talk to him because I felt like he just needed to be shown a good example....huh....???? I opened a can of worms. He probed why i had such thoughts. I told him that I felt he had been shown by his father how to be disrespectful to me. He was surprised that I could dream of such a thought. He said I have always treated you .....blah blah blah. I told him that I felt differently and I felt like it was showing in how our son't treated me. He got defensive and I was not going to engage in the defensive maneuvers any more in our marriage wars. So I retreated....I hung up the phone.

Then back to my daughter I refered to in the beginning. My daughter was a time bomb and she was pulling me into her war zone. I would send her for quiet time, I tried to be nice, I tried to get her communicate, I would tell her she couldn't talk for 5 minutes, and it kept going....tears, yelling at sister/brother, more tears, poor me, etc. Then dad shows up.  He comes home from work about 7 pm. Dinner done but kitchen a mess. Kids are aware of their dinner jobs but no one did them. Her dad was trying to talk to daughter in our room and I walked into our room. Our young son followed. He climbed on the bed. He was happy. Hubby wanted son out so he could talk to daughter. His tone and facial expression showed contempt toward me. So I picked up my son and dropped him onto the floor with my facial expression full of anger. I broke. I dropped him onto a blanket and pillow and I knew it wouldn't hurt him. My face showed utter disgust at the situation. My daughter had worn me out and my husband's tone fed by early feelings that I felt he didn't care about me (I became a victim at that moment). How he treats and really feels towards me is evident but he does not see it.

The dropping of my son didn't have to be a big deal. He did not get hurt and I was making a point (not probably the best way but I was reacting). I am not sure exactly what my subconscious reactionary point was but I only felt worn out emotionally. He was not injured and my face that my son didn't see was more meant for my husband. Hubby gets upset and I walk out. I was worn out.

So hubby follows me yelling for me to get back here right now. He yelled that I was a child abuser and he would call the bishop. He continued to insist I come back and yell at me how horrible I was. I said he was not hurt (didn't cry and only said it hurt....without tears was because of drawing attention to it) and I had no intention to hurt him. I dropped him on a blanket with a pillow under it. Go ahead call the bishop. Call the counselor. I don't care. I am not a child abuser. He continued with the bishop is a man of God and what he says.....I said said he is a man and he speaks as a man. (I will always use the spirit and prayer to discern truth....many church leaders speak as men even when counseling.)

Then it drew in my oldest son next as he came to the rescue of the younger son. My son (oldest) said it was wrong for me to throw him against the wall.....wow the story changed quick. He said dad is right and on and on. Yep he has no respect for me. I will not be a victim to the fact he does not respect me...how? I am not sure exactly.

Yes my 2 oldest son do not respect their mom. (oops victim again...so hard) Their dad has not shown the example toward women they need.  I walked away.

How do I not become a victim? I wanted to curl up in a ball in the closet and cry. I wanted to feel like a victim. I wanted to have a pity party. I said no! NO!! NO!!!
I am not going to give away my feelings of hope to this. I am not going to be a victim to anxiety and depression. So I sat down to pray and read....it my closet (quietest place to think and be alone).

My Mantra: I will not go to self-pity, depression, or anxiety.
I put my self in my closet and in my heart I wanted to run away. I felt shamed and no good. I sat in the closet and talked to my self:
  • You are good
  • -You are a good mother
  • -You are loved by my heavenly Father
  • -Women should be respected and loved and not forced by male dominance or treated inferior.
  • -I don't have to defend myself. There is no need to be a victim.
  • -I am sorry I was a little more forceful and frustrated than I would like to be toward my son
  • -I do not have to let my daughter suck me into a victim or persecutor. I do not have to rescue her from her own drama.
  • -I can slow down my heart. I do not have to defend myself.
  • -I don't have to be a perfect "housekeeper"....It is not my duty to pick up after everyone or do all the chores. I have a life besides laundry, cooking, and cleaning, which I find little joy in and only do because it needs to be done. No one else wanted to do it either.
  • -My greatest good is to love my children.
  • -I will apologize for not being as nice to my young son as I should. I was engaged in the drama at that moment but I can pull myself out.

I closed my eyes and prayed. I did my yoga breathing to slow down my mind and heart.

I go take an Ativan and get ready for bed. A new day tomorrow. I don't need to run away. I need to rest and find peace. I need to increase my Faith and Hope so I can help others grow in their faith and hope. I am not a victim in this situation.

Sleep does wonders!

NEXT DAY: Today is a new day.  I have spent time doing yoga. Learning to meditate and learning to find peace and nourish my faith and hope. Dishes never got done. I spent time cleaning my room and bathroom and getting "my space" more peaceful. I am going to make a bench cover tomorrow with my youngest son. It feel good not to be dragged down by others. I am sorry I lost myself for a moment of who I want to be but it could have been so much worse.

YOGA- a great tool for health

My heart is so full this morning. I just love YOGA!!!
I have learned so many truths that have helped me live my religion better.
10 years ago I learned about the 12 steps for addiction recovery with my own struggles with binge eating and my husbands addiction. These steps taught me how to apply the atonement in my life. I learned these are the steps to apply repentance and forgiveness of self and others through the atonement of Jesus Christ. It did not help me heal from the Trauma. I was plagued with triggers, feeling victimized, and a withdrawal or deadening of my heart just to keep contention out of the home. No pain if you don't feel.

About a year ago, I started therapy for healing from Betrayal Trauma. I felt that the model of Trauma (over the model of codependency)  is more appropriate to start healing from the Trauma. I had and have many codependency traits to overcome but until I saw from the light of how broken and unhealthy I am, I had no healing. My therapist has worked alot on how I talk to myself, my thoughts, and having more gratitude. He taught me about the victim triangle, the cycle of addiction, taking care of me, and that until as an individual I am healthy, I will usually have distorted thinking (called Automatic Negative Thinking). I was taught it is OK that I have trauma triggers. My anxiety or flight/fight trigger and depression could be overcome and how to manage it with therapy and medication. I was taught how to think about my thinking and ask "is this Accurate or am I distorting". Therapy was a very powerful tool in my case (I would recommend that if you are not being taught these things in therapy find a new one.)

Now I am being given new light. As I sat in my yoga teacher training for days. I was amazed at the truths that are found in eastern religions that in our western lifestyle we could benefit from applying. I have been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints my entire life, but I have been missing some important truths. They are in the teachings of the church but if you don't SEE them, they are hidden treasures of knowledge. Our western lifestyle (no cowboy hats) prevents us from searching from the inside out. We are so focused on the outside, our schedules, our activities, the commandments, our callings, our jobs, our kids, our homes, our stuff, that we don't even know how to SEE these truths that are the fruits of a spiritual life.

As I sat in my class, I learned some things that I am incorporating into my daily life that have allowed the next breakthrough in my healing from trauma, anxiety, depression, and control. It is so powerful and my days are so much better when I do my home yoga practice with just ME. Taking care of ME is so important. It allows me to then serve others by increasing their faith and hope (charity) because I am am FILLED with faith and hope. It is amazing. I also love teaching my Yoga class and share with others.

I am going to put my thoughts on this blog so others can be blessed by this as well. Just as the 12 steps guided me through a in the atonement of Jesus Christ, Yoga has taught me to fill the SPIRIT. It has taught me how to REMEMBER. It has taught me how to pray. It has taught me how to concentrate and meditate and breathe; a process I am still just beginning. It has taught me to move away from the "to do" list and improve from the inside out.

FAITH....THE KEY TO HAPPINESS IN LIFE

I have awakened from a deed sleep. I have seen the light. I have been restored to the truth. It feels so good. So wonderful. So good....Oh I already said that:)

I just can't describe the awakening I have had...but I am going to attempt to do so.
I had another counseling appointment today. I came in as an adult this time and left with some greater understanding.

So I said I was having a faith crisis. He was not surprised. I WAS!!! He said that it usually happens as people go through this. WHAT!!! I am not the first. OK so I learned a few things. So wonderful to have a great teacher.

With more space in my head I have been doing alot of studying. This had lead to many unanswered questions regarding the scriptures and church history.

Two days ago I got a text from the bishop and he scheduled an appointment  for me to see him. I had an appointment with him last night. I happened to be his last appointment. I was in a critical part of my faith crisis and I needed some inspiration and guidance. He must have felt inspired to call me in when he did. The timing was perfect. In fact a blessing.

He told me his story of how he had learned to nourish his faith. He had an uncle who had sent him letters when he was a teenager and exposed him to lots of faith challenging issues. I have been living in a bubble. I didn't have room in my head for much. The fog of depression kept me from having room for learning.  Also, I am on ADD medication and now I am able to study in more of a disciplined manner (have loved it). This opened up a new world for me.

This faith crisis I feel was just the Lord in my life. In fact. It was like the Lord said to me. Time to grow up. Time for your faith to grow up. The Bishop helped me understand that he to had to work and understand many things through faith and that there are things that we don't have answers to. The issue is to nourish your faith. Two hours later I leave his office feeling peace and my faith strengthen. Yes the fruits of the gospel are good. When I immerse myself in the gospel, I feel good. It feels right. I know there is truth all over the world and I am grateful I have seen the truth that so many people offer. I am also grateful to be a part of the restored gospel on the earth. Yes it feels good to be restored back to my faith and my doubts gone. I don't have all the answers but that is OK.

Today, I say I really would like to go to a counseling appointment. (I know it has only been 5 days but I left needing more guidance) So I show up at my counseling appointment today after talking with the bishop last night. I tell the counselor the answer the bishop gave me to my faith crisis. The bishop gave me the right answer....FAITH. What??? NO ANSWER is the ANSWER to alot of questions!!!

I came wanting to know how not to fall into the victim roll, or the rescuer, or the persecutor. I don't want to act like a child. Last time I left his office, I left clearly seeing how I would engage in the drama triangle. (previous post) Now I needed to know how to stay out of it.

So he explains it to me:
As an adult we have Hope, Faith, and Charity.
When we are children (or act as children) we are hopeless and have no control. These are the opposite of faith. What do we do inside when we feel hopeless....we give up. The extremes are control and giving up. Catch and release cycle is another example. (wording?) These are all examples some of the things part of the drama triangle.

So there are three things I need to do to not fall into extremes. You are incapable of doing things things in a childish state.
1. Create more hope in my life.
2. Create more faith in my life.
3. Charity. Definition: act of giving faith and hope to someone else, acting charitable

more hope....more faith....more Charity

If we have faith, God does NOT provide us with ALL the answers. We can have faith that one day we will have ALL the answers but not now. That is not part of this estate.
SAFETY, CONTROL, AND ANSWERS do NOT rely on FAITH.

Elder Erying said (paraphrasing) we came to earth to learn to have greater faith in Jesus Christ.

This is why we are here. Not to have all the answers, to control, or even have safety (ouch...that hurts a little).
Woman With Food Storage
Simple Example: Food Storage. This is not about safety or not being hungry. It is about faith. Do we have faith to keep the commandments. A flood could come and could wash away our food storage. We could have to leave suddenly and lose all our storage. It is not about control or hunger. It is about Faith.

Earth life: Now we are here on earth and we are living in another war zone. We are in a world that thrives on a desire for ANSWERS, CONTROL, and SAFETY. All of which are not possible in this life. He never promised these. If Lucifer can get us to feel hopeless and have no faith, he is accomplishing the same thing that he did in the previous life. If he can get us to doubt our faith by saying,  "I NEED THE ANSWER TO___________________(fill in blank)", he can get us to lose our faith. We become victims.

Death was an ever-present reality for the Saints crossing the plains, as depicted in this painting.
Our faithfulness can prepare us for a glorious resurrection, the reuniting of our body and spirit.
The Gspel of life and salvation reveals to each individual who receives it that this world is only a place of temporary duration, existence, trials, etc. Its present fashion and uses are but for a few days, while we were created to exist eternally. The wicked can see no further than this world is concerned. We understand that when we are unclothed in this present state, then we are prepared to be clothed upon with immortality—that when we put off these bodies we put on immortality [see Alma 11:43–44]. These bodies will return to dust, but our hope and faith are that we will receive these bodies again from the elements—that we will receive the very organization that we have here, and that, if we are faithful to the principles of [gospel] freedom, we shall then be prepared to endure eternally (DBY, 372).

Council_in_HeavenWar in Heaven: 1/3 of the host of heaven followed Lucifer's plan. He promised them safety and control of the outcome. God promised that at some future time a Savior would atone for the sins of the world and we could repent and receive all the commandments and ordinances we needed to return to our Heavenly Father. They were so afraid because if they believed in Heavenly fathers plan it required FAITH. They were not willing to live on faith because they would have to give up control. So they followed Lucifer out of fear of being lost. In the process of trying to control, they lived a self-fulfilling prophecy and were lost. So Faith was required before we came to earth. This is still happening today...

Jesus Christ's Example: This is why the scriptures are so powerful. Turmoil can be all around us and it does NOT have to touch us. For example the Savior in the storm. He was walking on the water in the midst of the storm. What kept the storm from sinking him...his thoughts. He had faith. He could not control the storm (actually he can but for the sake of the example) but it did not affect him. He kept his faith and therefore was not affected by the storm. It didn't take the storm away (storms will always be around in our lives) but with faith we can not fall away from the truth, even if others lose their faith along the way.

Trust others!!!!  Can I really trust another person? Someone who has hurt me? A victim or rescuer will say....."My needs will never be met if I trust others". Trust is not about control or safety. These are a victim mentality (yes I can't believe I am saying this. Me...who has begged for safety for years). This does not mean that if my husband started looking at pornography again that I would not have to distance myself from him if needed or if he is not listening I can tell him all the thoughts of my heart. This would have to be based on accurate information and not on distortions. In reality victims don't trust people. If Lucifer can get us to not trust people, then he can get us to feel like victims. When we trust people, we truly believe in a Savior who loves them as well.
Excelent Article: Trust begins with each of us In a world waning in trust, 'what can we do to help?' By Robert L. Millet Published: Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011
Jesus, as the perfect example of trust, demonstrated a willingness
to trust others, as well as lived a life of trustworthiness, as
depicted in this painting of meeting Mary after His resurrection.

Fear/Shame: a form of control. I realize I have been shaming my sons. My father was a porn addict (and still is). I was so afraid to marry a porn addict that somehow I did. My husband's thinking  was that he had taken care of the problem and it would not come back after marriage (common problem). Well after finding out I was married to an addict and unable to control husband, I decided I was going to raise my son's right. I would raise them differently. They would not struggle with the same things. I would change history. Ooops.... Lies....more Lies ....and more Lies. Control is not possible. I am NOT in charge. Taking away agency was Satan's plan. This plan (designed by Satan) lead to shaming my sons but not because I didn't care. It was all subconscious and reactionary. It was out of fear. It was out of love but not the love that keeps agency intact. Kids can't be given all the answers. You should teach correct principles. Guide them to seek their own answers to how to nourish and keep their own faith strong during their own challenges.

Modesty: I was taught and heard these shaming words. "Be careful what you wear. Dress modestly so you are not pornography for the boys." This is shaming girls. They should not feel like they have to rescue the boys from their thoughts. this is not empowering. The boys need to be in charge of their own thoughts. The girls should want to dress modestly because of who they are inside. They should not want to draw attention to themselves because of what they are wearing. It should come from who they are inside and not because they are afraid of becoming pornography to boys and need to rescue them. Boys are shamed as well. They are told they can't control their thoughts. They are helpless over their thoughts.

Homework:
1. write down my experiences. Especially how I can apply faith to each area of question: church history issues, modesty, shame, children, and on and on. Review these answers. These will be like my own personal doctrine and covenants. Answers and patters for questions that strengthen my faith
2. create faith and hope in my life and have charity by increasing the faith and hope in others.
3. Do things to increase my faith in the Savior. This will increase my "Adult" behavior.
4. Accept adversity
5. Forgive Self and Others. When we forgive and repent we give up control.

It is OK to question but most importantly you must nourish your FAITH and when their are no answers to all question. Faith becomes important.
My bishop said to his daughter. She was asking about polygamy. He said I am grateful for polygamy. She looks at him funny. Huh! If we had all the answers we would have a church full of uncommitted people. It would not require faith. Yes that is true. We are required to study it out in our mind and go to the Lord. That is why sometimes people wonder about the timing of some events in the church. It is just the time that answers are diligently sought. Like right now. I am seeking answers. Answers are coming and I am being taught but not how I would have thought. That is the way the Lord works. His ways are not my ways.
MODESTY:

I will eventually work through each of my faith issues and how I have worked through them in faith and nourished my faith. I am actually excited about this growth. It was scary at first but now I feel strengthened and sustained. I feel a great amount of HOPE!!! Hard to believe from a girl who sat across from a bishop 2 years ago and said "I have NO HOPE". He could not convince me that I had any. I was a victim then but not any more. I am empowered and I feel a great hope for the future. I even feel love for my husband. I actually like him (today at least....lets not push to hard...lol)
